Commuting under the River Thames

Here’s a fabulous London oddity I came across one day near Tower Hill.

It looks like it could be an entrance to an underground lair you might find in a James Bond or Sherlock Holmes film, but it is in fact the disused Victorian Tower Hill subway.

Once a way of travelling under the Thames – first via a small cable car and later as a pedestrian walkway. It was later used by the London Hydraulic Power Company for water mains. Now it’s houses communication cabling.
